NATO did not comment on reports of cyber attack by the US against Russia
The Alliance can use allied cyber forces only within its own missions and in accordance with its mandate. And information relating to other operations is the responsibility of other NATO members. This was stated by an official in the North Atlantic Alliance, – writes “RIA Novosti”.
Earlier, the American edition of the Washington Post published an article in which it was reported that the cyber command of the US armed forces conducted an “offensive” operation against the St. Petersburg “Internet research Agency” in 2018 during the midterm elections in the us Congress.
The NATO representative tried to comment on the report. According to him, the mandate of the Alliance is defensive and operates in accordance with international law. He added that NATO policy allows the organization to”use the national cyber potential of allies”. The source of RIA Novosti added that”on issues of national activities should contact the relevant national authorities.”
Expert in the field of information security Vitaly Vekhov on radio Sputnik expressed his opinion on cyber attacks by us intelligence services in Russia. He called it another provocation. NBC reported that us President Donald trump “personally approved” a cyber attack against the Russian “Internet research Agency” during the midterm elections of 2018. However, the presidential administration refused to comment on this information.
Recall, the American newspaper the Washington Post told about the successful mission, which concerned cyber attacks on Russia. The publication writes that on the eve of the elections in America in November 2018, the us cyber command (US Cyber Command) allegedly managed to disconnect from the Internet “Internet research Agency”. In reality, however, the U.S. Department attacked the mythical “online research”, and real media under the name “Federal news Agency”. Although there is nothing to be surprised, because in the Western media IRA is often associated with the FAN without any reason.
The official representative of the Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova commented on the cyber attacks on the FAN. She noted that this is not the first case, and the website of the Russian foreign Ministry is also regularly subjected to such attacks. According to her, Russia asked for official confirmation of these actions in the us government agencies. The diplomat stressed that the desire to hide the correspondence on the topic of cyberattacks shows how weak Washington’s position on this issue.
